A gravel driveway is loose decorative aggregate laid over a membrane and compacted sub-base, usually retained by a stabilising grid and firm edging.
Cost

Best for
Budget projects, rural and large frontages, permeable requirements
A cellular grid keeps gravel where it belongs, stops rutting and makes the surface far easier to walk and wheel across.
Choose an angular 10mm to 20mm aggregate. Rounded pea gravel rolls under tyres and spreads across the footway.
Gravel is permeable, so it generally avoids the surface water trigger for planning permission. The vehicle crossing still needs council consent.
Use a stabilising grid, a firm haunched edge and a recessed threshold detail at the entrance.
