Five surfaces cover almost every Glasgow driveway. Each one differs on cost per square metre, permeability, lifespan and how easily it can be repaired.
| Material | Cost per m² | Lifespan | Permeable | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Block paving | £80 – £190 per m² | 25+ years | Yes, with permeable jointing and open-graded base | Kerb appeal, repairability, traditional Glasgow frontages |
| Resin-bound | £100 – £160 per m² | 15 – 25 years | Yes, when laid over a permeable base | Seamless finish, drainage compliance, modern frontages |
| Tarmac | £55 – £90 per m² | 15 – 20 years | No, unless porous asphalt is specified | Large areas, long drives, tight budgets |
| Gravel | £45 – £70 per m² | 10 – 20 years with top-ups | Yes | Budget projects, rural and large frontages, permeable requirements |
| Concrete | £70 – £130 per m² | 25 – 30 years | No | Seamless strength, imprinted patterns, heavy vehicle use |
A block paving driveway is built from individual concrete or stone units laid on a compacted sub-base and sand laying course, held by haunched edge restraints.
£80 – £190 per m²
A resin-bound driveway is natural aggregate mixed with clear resin and trowelled over a permeable base to form a seamless, porous surface.
£100 – £160 per m²
A tarmac driveway is hot-laid asphalt compacted over a Type 1 sub-base to form a continuous, hard-wearing black surface.
£55 – £90 per m²
A gravel driveway is loose decorative aggregate laid over a membrane and compacted sub-base, usually retained by a stabilising grid and firm edging.
£45 – £70 per m²
A concrete driveway is a reinforced slab poured over a compacted sub-base and finished by brushing, imprinting or exposing the aggregate.
£70 – £130 per m²
